Healing Dance® is bodywork performed in warm water. Sessions are usually given in 92-96°F water to support the receiver's comfort. Healing Dance® originated in the 1990's at Harbin Hot Springs in California. It began when a Watsu® practitioner, Alexander Georgeakopoulos, began incorporating movements from Trager Work and dance into Watsu® sessions. Alexander was a professional ballet and modern dancer, teacher, and choreographer before studying the holistic arts of Watsu®, massage, and Trager.
In a Healing Dance® session, you are floated on the surface of the water while receiving movements that allow your body to go into a state of deeper relaxation. You may receive gradual stretching, rocking, waves, spirals, figure eight's, or dance-like movements. You do not need to be able to swim, float, or walk to receive. Many people who have experienced trauma in the water receive sessions to heal. Healing Dance® is used for people with spinal cord injuries and paralysis as well. Any body size can receive.
