Watsu® ("water shiatsu") is gentle bodywork performed in warm water. Sessions are usually given in 92-96°F water to support the receiver's comfort. Watsu® originated in the 1980's in California at Harbin Hot Springs. There, Zen Shiatsu practitioner Harold Dull began giving shiatsu stretches in the pools at Harbin. Over the years, Watsu® has evolved into its own bodywork modality. In a session, you are floated on the surface of the water while receiving movements and stretches that allow your body to go into a state of deeper relaxation.
You do not need to be able to swim, float, or walk to receive. Many people who have experienced trauma in the water receive sessions to heal. Watsu® is used for people with spinal cord injuries and paralysis as well. Any body size can receive.
